Firewire Machado Groove Helium 6'2 Squash

The Firewire Groove surfboard, built with the amazing Helium technology, is the latest creation from the legendary Rob Machado. Designed to bring pure surfing joy to everyone, this board is a performance thruster that offers extra paddle power with its wider, thicker nose, while still keeping things sharp and responsive with a pulled-in squash tail for top-level performance.

Rob crafted the Groove with waves in mind that have a bit of push, from waist-high to just overhead, but don’t worry—it’s also great in weaker waves. It picks up small, soft waves with ease and generates enough speed to keep things fun, even when the conditions aren’t perfect. It’s not a full-on groveler, but it’s super adaptable. You can ride it as a classic thruster with Rob’s specially designed fin set, or try out the 2+1 fin setup for smaller or weaker days.

The Groove features a sleek, thinned-out foil and a narrower tail block, topped off with a pulled-in squash tail. With a bit more rocker than Rob’s recent models, it offers great release off the tail—don’t let that tail rocker fool you, it works perfectly! The board has a single-to-double concave through the fins, along with a Vee out the back, all aimed at giving you lift, speed, and making the board feel extra loose.

Like most Firewire boards, the Groove packs in a good amount of volume but hides it really well. The foam is concentrated through the center to give you extra paddle power without making the rails too bulky.

Firewire’s Helium tech takes this already impressive construction to the next level. It’s lighter, durable, and feels incredibly fast. With high-density aerospace composite deck skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix in the rails, the board has a snappy flex response that’s perfect for performance surfing. Having ridden a few boards with this tech, it really feels light but with a solid, responsive feel—Helium is definitely here to stay!

The Firewire Groove shares some similarities with the Dominator 2.0, but it carries the volume in a slightly different way. As a dedicated small to medium wave performance board, it’s hard to beat.
